About Baltimore County
Baltimore County wraps the city on three sides — a 600-square-mile horseshoe that runs from the working waterfront in Dundalk and Essex, through the older inner-ring suburbs of Catonsville, Towson, and Pikesville, out to the rolling north county around Cockeysville, Hunt Valley, and Reisterstown. It's one of the most varied housing markets in Maryland, and "a Baltimore County remodel" can mean almost anything depending on where the house sits.
Closest to the city line you find the oldest stock: late-1800s and early-1900s Victorians, four-squares, and colonials with plaster walls, original trim, and the knob-and-tube and cast-iron plumbing that came with them. The post-war boom filled in the middle of the county with brick ranchers, Cape Cods, and split-levels — structurally simple but built with small, closed-off rooms. Push north and the stock gets newer: 1980s-and-later subdivisions with bigger footprints, where the work is usually updating dated kitchens and baths rather than fixing old mechanicals.
